Nannies and childcare experts are in great demand across the world, but this does not necessarily guarantee that every position will be suitable for you. Even with a good employment contract there can be surprises at a given position. If you come across an unsatisfactory arrangement it usually helps to discuss the problem with your employers before leaving the position. Remember to stay calm, present the facts and offer possible solutions. If your discussion does not yield satisfactory results, then you may need to consider finding a new position.

Stay Calm

Regardless of the problem that you have encountered, rarely does it help to become emotional. If an unsatisfactory arrangement presents no immediate threat to your health and well-being then try to remain calm and plan the best way to discuss the situation with your employer. Ask for a private meeting so that you have the time and space to present your case. Do not allow yourself to be brushed off or to be treated without proper respect. Do not agree to hold the discussion on the fly or while your employer is looking after other tasks. Ask for their undivided attention. If you are not granted this respect then you need to consider whether you should be working for this particular employer.

Present the Facts

When you do find yourself alone with your employers endeavour to present the facts as you see them. For example, if you find your accommodation unsatisfactory then present why you find it unsatisfactory without asking for the moon. Your requests for a big screen TV, personal chef and private hot-tub will not likely be fulfilled, however your request for a door and an extra lamp are not in any way extravagant and should be looked after. If you find yourself doing extra duties without a corresponding pay increase, bring your employment contract with you to explain your perception of your duties. Also be ready to remind your employer of which extra duties you have performed and on what dates. It may be that your employer was unaware that you had taken on consistent extra duties and your gentle reminder will allow them to see the big picture. It may also be that your employer finds nothing wrong with the arrangements, so you’ll need to know what you want from the discussion in order to be able to determine if it was a success.

Offer Possible Solutions

Usually when you are confronted with an unsatisfactory arrangement you know exactly how you would like it to be fixed. If you would like extra pay for extra work then you’ll need to ask for it. The same goes for using the family car to transport children to activities, money in the kitty for the expenses you incur on a daily basis and uninterrupted quiet time during your off hours. Again, it may be that your employer was unaware of the situation so your calm report and the opportunity to correct the situation should go a long way towards developing a satisfactory solution for everyone. However, some employers may not be willing to work with you to make the position more suitable. If this is the case, then you need to think long and hard about whey you should stay at a position in which you are subjected to unsatisfactory arrangements by employers who are not concerned about your well being.
